Special Valentine’s Day Themed Tour:
“Valentines in the 1860’s”

Sometimes called the cruelest of months, February is perhaps more favourably celebrated as the traditional month of romance and love.

Although diarist Samuel Pepys mentions observances of February 14th in the 17th century, special handwritten notes and letters for Valentine’s Day did not appear widely until late in the 18th century.

After the Penny Post was introduced in Britain in the 1840’s, commercially produced cards with coloured illustrations could be mailed around the country at minimal cost. The Valentine Card grew in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic and in 1865 New Yorkers sent out over 66,000 Valentine epistles to loved ones.
